Welcome to the Craft Group page
We are hopefully anticipating our craft and workshop groups can start up again as soon as threats of the virus have passed and we’re allowed to meet. In the meantime if anyone is bored with being locked down Penny would be happy to email patterns for knitted items. You can get in touch with her at email@example.com
Pre covid our regular sessions took place on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month from April to November 7-9pm. We do hope these can be reinstated later this year, but for the immediate future we'll hold pop up sessions in the Garden Room on some Wednesday afternoons (2-4pm) when the weather warms up. From 17 May we will be able to go inside our lovely new look Trading Store, but the rule of 6 will still apply so places will have to be booked. You don't need any qualifications, just enthusiasm! If you are interested in coming along, please get in touch with Penny.
Scarecrow Project for Hurst Show - 21 August
The Craft Group first entered a Scarecrow in the Hurst Show in 2016 with Bertie Bedstraw (who was a figment of the imagination). In 2017 we entered an effigy of Donald Trump and in 2018 WHA won the competition with Nell Gwyn. As winners Rachael and Josie were asked to judge the scarecrow class in 2019, so we couldn't enter or they might have been accused of bias! Design work has already started for our 2021 scarecrow.
We didn't let the grass grow under our feet in 2020, though, and many thanks are due to everyone who continued to produce lovely items during the lockdowns for our home-made craft sales
We were able to hold a few 'pop-up' sessions in the Garden Room and in the Store, and our annual Lavender Wands workshop took place on 20 July. It was a pleasant afternoon, smelt delicious and a new skill learnt. Crafters subsequently looked out for more stems to create even more wands. Keep one under your pillow to promote a good nights' sleep, or use to repel clothes moths.
We were lucky in September to be able to set out our wares on the 4 sunny Sundays whilst our mini Autumn Shows were taking place in the Garden Room. Our local Camera Club friend, Graham Breadmore, took photos of both the mini show exhibits and craft stall at the 2nd mini show and these can be seen on the galleries page.
We also took part in the Wokingham Christmas Market – a new and much smaller venture replacing the annual Wokingham Christmas Carnival which had had to be cancelled. Strict covid safe measures were in place on the day which dawned fairly cold, but thankfully not wet or windy. We had a steady stream of customers, all feeling as if they were on day release, and sold out of the potted hyacinths.
One of our recycling projects in the summer of 2019 involved transforming 2 litre plastic bottles into colourful flowers These were displayed on a stall in Wokingham market along with other recycled items such as bug hotels, plant pots and more. The flowers have since been donated to WADE for their sensory garden. We hope they continue to add a splash of colour in the garden during the winter months and will be visible to WADE members visiting their Centre on the Reading Road.
